Citizenship
Welcome Citizenship and the Deaf Community!
The site has been set up to share information on any research and academic related work on the subject of citizenship relevant to Deaf people and the Deaf community. Its creation follows the recent publication of the study undertaken by Dr Steven Emery, and recently published in English and DVD format by Ishara Press. It includes the follow up to the research on citizenship, a Leverhulme Trust funded project on minority group rights in relation to the Deaf community.
It is a work in progress, and has been set up to:
- make known the existence of an English/BSL DVD publication on the subject of citizenship;
- disseminate the information of the minority group rights research that followed the study on citizenship;
- become a space and resource for sharing information on citizenship and group rights in relation to the Deaf community.
The website includes access to: full notes of the launch of the book/DVD (on March 31st 2011), including the powerpoint that was used at the meeting – this event also shared the results of the group rights research undertaken at the University of Bristol’s Centre for Deaf Studies department; clips of the DVD in BSL, kindly put up on the BSL Uptake website; and information on where to buy the book, that has been produced by Ishara Press.
This website is the first internet resource that has been developed on citizenship and group rights, and there are plans to expand it in the near future. The work by Dr Emery is not the only resource or work that reflects on citizenship and/or group rights, so if you want any other links to other research/academic articles on the subject to be put up on this website, please do make contact!
I hope you will find the website and the information and resources contained within it useful and informative. Feedback is, as always, very welcome!
